The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023 (“DPDP Bill”) was finally passed by the Parliament which will give India, its first comprehensive privacy legislation. Like its previous iterations, the Bill seeks to establish a regulatory body called the Data Protection Board of India, obligates data fiduciaries to undertake privacy compliances, provides for rights and duties of the data principals as a manifestation of their right to privacy, provides for adjudicatory and appellate procedures and prescribes penalties for contravention of the provisions.
The current version of the Bill has been introduced with some changes compared to its previous iterations. To this end, Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan (LKS) is hosting a webinar to critically assess the proposed legislation, the extent of changes, and how the Bill as a whole is set to impact businesses in India.
Considering that the applicability of the Bill is agnostic of the industry sector and complements any sectoral regulations, it is worthwhile to deliberate upon the impact of proposed legislation on the industry. This would ensure that organizations are prepared and well-equipped to implement the recommendations and clarifications.
