The Central and State Governments have acted on this evolving situation by imposing lockdowns, quarantine measures, travel bans, and shutting down certain services and private businesses, while only permitting essential services to function. With a rise in the numbers of COVID-19 cases, it is likely that these restrictive measures will be extended and become more stringent.
The impact of COVID-19 on domestic and international businesses is severe across the country and sectors. Employers are generally obliged to ensure a safe and healthy work environment for their workforce and are required to take reasonable steps to ensure the prevention of COVID-19 outbreak at the workplace. This lockdown has its own economic consequences and many companies and employers with operations in India are facing challenges in coping with this fast-changing situation. The common concerns include remote working, leave management, lay-offs, reduction in pay, safe traveling, compensation to infected employees etc. Therefore, in this scenario, it is important for these Indian companies and employers to find the right balance between business continuity and concerns over employees’ health and safety.
